In last week’s Community Sneak Peek, we shared more information on the subscription and notification system coming to the new Google Cloud Community, which is scheduled to launch on June 23rd, 2021. If you missed the post, you can read it here. This week, we are going to talk about another exciting feature of the new Community: Badges and rank icons.

Both badges and ranks icons offer visual cues for a Community member’s rank and accomplishments. They are either based on activity and earned, or they are assigned manually by an admin. Despite this similarity, the way they work and how they are displayed is slightly different. Badges are shown on the profile page of each Community member.

Some badges relate to an activity count in the Community, such as receiving one’s first Like, or having 50 posts accepted as solutions to a question. Anyone can unlock an activity-based badge by completing a certain amount of activities.

When it comes to assigned badges, there are a variety of badges that one can receive. For instance, if you are a user of the currently existing Cloud Connect Community or this Apigee Community then you will receive a Legacy badge upon claiming your new account. This badge is a sign of our appreciation for the fact that you were previously a community member and have chosen to join us on the new site. This is a well-deserved but quick-to-unlock badge, so make sure to claim your account once the site is up to highlight on your new profile!

Now, on to rank icons! Rank icons give you a quick idea of what someone’s function is or where they are on the rank ladder. For example, admins have a specific assigned rank and associated rank icon that shows up next to their username. The same goes for staff and some other groups of users. Below, you can see a screenshot of a Community Manager with the Admin rank icon to the left of the username.

While activity badge images focus on a single form of engagement, the earned rank ladder system is more complex. In order to gain an earned rank, you have to complete a variety of activities, which can be a combination of posts, solutions, membership time, and more. If you want to climb the rank ladder, simply do your best to be active, helpful, and polite, and you should see an increase in your rank over time.

Just like with all other features highlighted in our sneak peeks, we will have support articles with more information on badges and ranks in the new Community, including a full list of them.

What do you think of the new badges and ranks? Share your feedback below!
