We started our Community Sneak Peek series last week, by introducing the navigation and UI of the new Google Cloud Community, which is set for a tentative beta launch target of June 23rd, 2021. If you missed our post, you can read it here. This week, we are continuing the series with more information on how subscriptions and notifications work in the new Community.

Subscriptions and notifications are a great way to keep track of all conversations in your favorite boards and to not miss out on any discussions related to your favorite topics. Let’s start out by taking a look at board subscriptions.

Below, you can see a screenshot of our new dedicated Apigee board. Clicking on Options on the right gives you a drop-down menu with several options, including the ability to subscribe to the board.

Similarly, you can also subscribe to individual threads or labels. Subscribing to labels enables you to specifically tailor your notifications to the content that you are the most interested in. In the screenshot below, you can see what it looks like when a user views all threads associated with the Analytics label. As you can see, an option to subscribe to the label is displayed at the top.

So, what happens when you choose to subscribe to a board, thread, or label? Depending on your notification settings, you can receive a pop-up that informs you of updates and/or an e-mail notification, either every time that there is activity on the content that you subscribed to, or a regular digest. In addition, you will see a colored number circle for notifications on your avatar, when you have a new notification, while on the Community site. Pretty neat, right?

Clicking on Notifications in the dropdown takes you to your notification feed, which displays all notifications that you have received.

By the default, you receive notifications for any activity on a new thread that you create or participate in. However, you can change this setting and a host of other options from the ‘My subscriptions’ tab on your profile. We’ll have a support article ready for you, when we launch the new Community site, to ensure that you know how to change your settings. That way you can make the most of the new subscriptions and notifications features.

What are your thoughts on what we’ve just outlined? Do you already have plans for how you are going to use subscriptions and notifications? Any topics that interest you specifically?
