how to deny bots or unwanted crawlers

Dear All,

There are many unwanted scripts, bots and crawlers hitting 3 public api endpoints in apigee(on premise). Currently they are blocked using http 403.

Do we have any best practice which is the best http response code to be send in these cases.

a. http 403

b. http 404

c. http 401

Also do we have any mechanism in apigee to send delayed response to unwanted bots and scripts?
