Asynchronous calling and synchronous long running callings by Apigee Api proxy instance

hello everyone.

Can you suggest a good solution to manage both asynchronous APIs callings and synchronous long running APIs callings by using an API Proxy instance?

I've looked at some posts on this Community and it seems that the only way to do that is configuring a javascript based collout policy in the request flow.
