Java Authentication Plugin Support

I am currently researching various gateway applications to manage various APIs at my company. One of the primary requirements of the gateway is having the ability to take our current authentication program, written in Java, as a Plugin. I'm wondering if this would be possible with Java Callout policy or if there is another solution capable of implementing our authentication program. I'm wondering if anyone has done something similar or know of any possible solutions and would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Can you explain in more detail what you mean by "authentication program" ?

and also elaborate on the goals of integrating that thing into Apigee Edge.

Which persons are you authenticating? Administrative users? users of apps that invoke the APIs? Developer portal users? someone else?
