How does Apigee components authenticate with each other?

When Management Server communicates with PostgresSQL or QPID or with Message Processor, how are the communications authenticated? Looks like it is done using username:passwords. How are passwords kept secure? Are they encrypted? Where are the encryption keys stored? Who can have access to the keys? Can keys be rotated?

I am looking for this information for all Edge components inter communication. Is there any documentation which captures this information?
