How to test/monitor API Gateway availability?

There are few queries related to testing the gateway availability:

1. How do we know if the gateway is actually healthy?
2. Is there any particular log that indicates trouble, such that we can create alerts?
3. Any synthetic test that can be done?
4. What are the symptoms when:
- A router does not respond
- A MP does not respond
- Two Cassandra nodes do not respond
