How to implement pagination beyond 512k?

As a followup to question https://community.apigee.com/questions/8909/json-pagination-on-apigee-edge.html, how would anyone recommend caching payloads greater than the 512k limit per object in the Apigee Edge L2 cache?

I'd like to avoid using BaaS, since the caching layer has built-in TTL, but if there's a way around that too, I'll like to hear it.
