In a setup with two replicating OpenLDAP servers (12-host installation) do both need to be backed up

I have a customer who would like to only backup one LDAP server in their environment where they have two DCs with two LDAP servers set up for replication.

Is it possible to only backup one of them, and restore both LDAP servers from this single backup?

At the heart of the question lies the requirement that on LDAP server does not need to be shut down for backup which currently is a requirement of the apigee-service backup tool.

Yes. This will work as long as replication between ldap servers was enabled while doing the install/config. OR this was enabled post install.

In fact most of the other replications are one way rather than master<->master. Which means you would actually need backup from one DC alone.
