Developer/Developer App vs Consumer/Consumer App

Any idea why the Apigee Edge Developer and Developer App are not named as Consumer and Consumer App. We have distributed development model(business teams have their own api developers) and they always find it difficult to differentiate between a Management Portal User( actual API Developer) and Developer who is actually the consumer. Even the Developer App credentials says Consumer Key and Consumer Secret.

@Remeesh ,

API Ecosystem is driven by App Developers. If you can see the industry approach, everyone uses developer term when it comes to API consumer. For example, https://developers.facebook.com/ , https://dev.twitter.com/ etc.

When it comes to your question, "Find it difficult to differentiate between a Management Portal User( actual API Developer) and Developer who is actually the consumer"

  • Remember, Management Portal is only for API Developers.
  • Developer Portal is the front end for APP Developers.
  • Yes, Developer App credentials says "Consumer Key and Consumer Secret" . But, You can modify same in Developer Portal & You can call them as "App key" & "App Secret" OR "API Key" and "API Secret"

Different enterprises use different names when it comes to Consumer Key & Secret. You can customize same in Developer Portal.

Hope it helps. Keep us posted if any.

Thank you @Anil Sagar for the detailed reply. I partially agree with you, but on your first point "Management Portal only for API Developers", somewhat difficult to digest the naming convention of Publish > "Developer" instead an "App Developer" or "Consumer"(may be not industry standard) on MUI made much more easy to differentiate with actual API developer. It's just my thought, but could be a non-standard as per industrial standards. And the dev portal yes, the key and secret, we can have custom names.
