Is Cloud Tools for Eclipse plugin now dead?

Hi,

The Cloud Tools for Eclipse plugin ( https://cloud.google.com/eclipse/docs/quickstart ) has been stuck on Eclipse version 4.21 for over 2 years (it fails to install on later versions of Eclipse).

Google is retiring Java 1.8:  https://cloud.google.com/appengine/docs/standard/lifecycle/support-schedule#java and asking us to move to Java 17.

The problem is, Eclipse 4.21 only supports up to Java 16:

So it'll be impossible to use Eclipse anymore, unless Google updates the plugin to support later versions of Eclipse.

Or is there another solution?

Thanks.

Hi @craigomit

Welcome and thank you for reaching out to our community.

I understand your concerns regarding Cloud Tools for Eclipse having version 4.21 since September 2021. Rest assured that Google Cloud will continue to support the mentioned plugin but there are no announcements yet for another version release.

Consider looking into the answer/ comment section of this post I found in StackOverflow and if it still doesn't help, you can avail a support package for a much more detailed assistance from Google Cloud team.

Thanks @lsolatorio

Everything you say is correct.  The last version that Google supports is Eclipse 2021-09 (4.21).  Everything people comment in the forums is also correct, the Google Cloud Tools  for Eclipse doesn't install on anything later than 4.21.

The problem still is, that Eclipse 4.21 doesn't support Java 17 (you need Eclipse 4.26 or later).  And Google is asking us to move to Java 17.

Therefore, Google is asking us to move to a version of Java, that they themselves do not support with their Cloud Tools for Eclipse.

I'm not sure signing up for a Google Support package would get me very far with this issue.

I'll investigate moving away from the Google Cloud Tools for Eclipse.  Maybe Maven or something can do the same job.

Cheers.
