Security option to add to a proxy that uses a backend API with Basic Authentication

The backend API only supports Basic Authentication.

After I create a proxy on APIGEE, please suggest what is the best option for adding security to this API, other than API Key.

Apigee support many authentication mechanism .

Authencation mechanism you choose in my opinion should be based on your kind of api/proxy use case ( ex. Is it for business to business integration or b2c etc ) and the kind of data it exposes .
