How to gain access to API for personal use

Hi there,

I have never used the google API before and am simply trying to use it to pull my google calendar info so I can add each item to a list in trello.  I just want this for personal use but I don't understand how to get access to the API. First off, when I try to do consent, it just gives me and error when I click submit saying something vague like "An error occured".  After doing some digging I found out that you have to connect a project to firebase to get around this. Why is this so? Or am I just doing something wrong?

Second: When I choose the calendar/auth scope for my Oauth it then requires verification for the app. I don't understand why there are so many hoops to jump through. Is this new? I watch youtube videos of example of people making stuff and I follow along and they don't have these issues but I do.

Are all these restrictions new to google or something? Anyone have a workaround or know what I might be doing wrong?
